Post by Wonder B » 26 Jun 2009, 00:15

On t'aime Michael

"I just hope that his family has peace. I hope Michael's soul is
at peace. It's still overwhelming and I'm sorry I'm not a little clearer. It's
devastating to me. I don't quite get it. I just don't understand how a person
who is younger than I was and to me still had a lot to give the world, is no
longer here. I still haven't really digested it," Rodgers said.
Rodgers said Jackson would be remembered as one of the biggest
influences on pop culture.
"It's on the level of Elvis. It's on the level of The Beatles.
It's on the level of Madonna, Streisand. I mean it's that superlative, it's
that rarefied air of just the handful of superstars. It feels a little weird
because records like 'Thriller' are so big, you almost forget all the other
great stuff that preceded it and even things that happened after 'Thriller'.
I've been around a lot of stars and I've been around a lot of great music, but
when you listen to Michael's stuff, you can see that it was ground-breaking on
many different levels. Imagine having a career over and over and over again
and each time that that career jump-started the next phase of his life. It
sort of changed pop culture."
In 1994, Jackson married Elvis Presley's only child, Lisa Marie, but
the marriage ended in divorce in 1996. Rodgers recalled the pop singer
appeared to be struggling to cope at the time.
"I actually said to him - 'You know what, Michael, you seem like
you're in pain, bro. Why don't you come up to my house. I live in Connecticut,
I guarantee you, no-one will know that you're there. You can just hide out, we
can chill, we can just play music for a couple of days, we can sit and talk.
He didn't take me up on it, but I could tell he was a little bit in pain,
searching, wanted peace and I think it was nice to reminisce with somebody who
knows them from way back in the old days. I mean the fact we spent time
talking about being on tour with the Jackson Five, I mean, literally that's
what we talked about for 3 or 4 hours. You could see that he was happy
thinking about those memories," Rodgers said.
Rodgers said Jackson was a kind soul, and always looked out for
others.
"He was always sweet and wonderful. I remember one time I called
his office because a girl from the 'Make a Wish Foundation', her last request
was to meet Michael Jackson. He was performing at Madison Square Garden. So I
called his office and they said sure, bring her over. I brought her to the
show and she had a brain tumor. Not only did I bring her backstage - and
Michael just treated her like a princess, but when everybody saw me bringing
her back to Michael, then next thing I know everybody in the audience, I mean
people from Mike Tyson, LL Cool Jay, next thing I know, this little girl, and
she even said that, it was the greatest night of her life."
