L'un des membres de Sugarhill Gang est décédé d'un cancer. RIP. Mais le groupe fut célèbre pour leur mega HIT planétaire "Rappers Delight" en 1979 et surtout pour l'avoir piqué sans vergogne de GOOD TIMES...

Membre du légendaire groupe SUGARHILL GANG, il est parti aujourd'hui Mardi 11 Novembre dans sa ville de New-York, il avait 57 ans...
Lors de leur passage au Baltic il y a une paire d'années il n'était pas sur scène avec ses compères Wonder Mike et Master G...
Comme tout le monde le sait il restera dans l'histoire de la musique comme faisant partie du 1er groupe de rap à exploser sur la scène mondiale avec le méga tube de 1979 "Rapper's Delight" basé sur le non moins célèbre "Good Times" de Chic...

With a heavy heart that we announce that our brother Big Bank Hank passed today at the very early age of 57 years young. We will never forget the joy he brought to so many lives especially the lives of the people in the hip-hop, rap, and R&B community.

Hank was born in the Bronx, New York City. He graduated from Bronx Community College with an A.S. degree in oceanography. While attending college, he won several championships in wrestling. After graduating from college, Hank found it very hard to attain a position in oceanography, so he worked at a pizzeria. He did his job so well that when the owner of the shop expanded his business to Englewood, New Jersey, he brought Hank over to head the Crispy Crust store. While managing for a local hip hop group, the Cold Crush Brothers, Hank was discovered by Sylvia Robinson. She was out trying to find an act for the new trend she had discovered hip hop through her son, and she heard Hank rapping some of the Cold Crush Brothers' rhymes. When Sylvia asked him to join the group she was forming, Hank went to Grandmaster Caz of the Cold Crush Brothers for rhymes. Caz gladly gave him his notebook, hoping to eventually get something in return. Hank was 22 years old at the time when the Sugarhill Gang's self-titled album was released.

Il entre ainsi ( jeune en plus ) au Panthéon de la Black Music pour être l'un des chanteurs du 1er hit mondial de rap et ainsi ouvrir une nouvelle page dans l'histoire de la musique populaire.
C'est d'ailleurs curieux de constater que 35 ans après, Rapper's Delight reste le plus célèbre titre de rap et pourtant il y en a eu depuis ! Je ne vois pas d'équivalent.

L'histoire avait mail commencé pour les CHIC men, mais depuis comme ils sont crédités comme co-compositeurs, financièrement c'est le jackpot éternel. Il se dit même que Rappers's Delight s'est plus vendu que Good Times qui a pourtant été n°1 dans les charts US (entre autres).

RIP Big Bank Hank.

Triste nouvelle...57 ans ça fait jeune pour partir. Son "Rapper's Delight" était une révolution... Depuis c'est devenu un son inoxydable.
Je suis sûr qu'il continue à rapper là-haut
